The future of the desktop and business
Written by jonoATkdeDOTorg.
In these fast turning days of Open Source operating systems and software, the state of
the desktop is changing at a rapid rate. We have direction, development and evolution from
all camps. Although progress is most certainly being made, and KDE is one of the leaders
of the open source desktop revolution, how does this change the business world?
From the outset, it seems clear how businesses encounter software and IT based solutions. Many often discuss the true total cost of ownership (TCO) of a solution, and many quote the future scalability of solutions. There is no doubt that all of these elements are important in the decision making process, and whearas other vendors were making clear progress ahead of the open source camps, the line is now blurring significantly.
KDE as a desktop is a serious contender. I don't say that from evangelism but from experience of seeing KDE used in enterprise applications where KDE is integral to business flow. Not only does this assist in making KDE more attractive and viable for more people, but it makes KDE a more accessable desktop for those who can use it at home and at work.
As development moves at it's usual ferverous pace and more of the pieces of the puzzle fit into place, we can see KDE getting into more and more facilities and see it truly changing the shape of the business desktop.
