| Success Story | We were approached by an existing customer who was a long time customer of Novell Netware. 6 months ago we were called to upgrade there system from Netware 3.11 to Netware 5. We introduced them to Linux. We also won a bid to re-write their existing ERP system for Win32 platform. We won the bid because we showed how Linux could be used for the server and PostgreSQL database can be used as the backend database. The clients are Win32 clients. Samba for file/print sharing. CEO was also influenced by IBM's investment in Linux too. During the re-write we were consulted again by same company for a low cost alternative to Windows for their shop floor PCs. These PCs were to under powered for NT (486, Pentium 90s). The cost to upgrade: purchase Windoze software and Office was not justifiable. We offered to beta test Linux, KDE on their existing hardware where only cost would be our time. We put new cards in the old workstations and installed our Pozix Linux 2.4 (Linux Kernel 2.4 with a KDE 2.2 binary we pre-compiled for them). THEY LOVE IT! The KDE and KOFFICE is beginning to be used in the office now. They are not upgrading to OfficeXP from Office97 and instead going Linux/KDE. We now have 15 total workstations running Linux/KDE and they regularly trade Word documents with minor issues. We look like heroes. In the area this happen, the company next door is a tool & die shop. They saw what we did and the cost savings. Long story short we are now implementing a similar solution for this customer. Neither of these customers heard of Linux 6 months ago. The first customer was a Rubber & Plastics shop & second customer is a tool & die shop. Companies that don't require high-end workstations but without Linux would be forced into them to run the over weight NT/XP and MS-Office applications. The software cost savings has allowed both customers to buy some new workstations! We are now writing our ERP software for both Win32 and KDE. Our developers prefer KDevelop over Kylix too. Keep up the good work! The Linux/KDE revolution is a win-win situation. Please email if you have any specific questions about this story. Eric Mayo Pozicom Technologies, Inc.
